There’s something special about finding the right fabric for a sewing project. The colours, the print, the way it drapes in your hands - sometimes, a fabric is all the inspiration you need to get started.
That’s exactly what makes the new Bloom Dress & Top pattern from Peppermint Magazine such a lovely collaboration for Rare Patterns.
Created for sewists who love a thoughtful, handmade wardrobe, the Bloom dress & top is a relaxed, versatile design with plenty of room to make it your own. And, of course, the right fabric makes all the difference.
Three fabrics, three ways to bloom
For the Bloom pattern, the Peppermint team chose three fabrics from Rare Patterns, each bringing its own character to the finished garment.
Blossom in Spring - 100% washed linen
Hand-painted in watercolour, Blossom in Spring brings a softer, more romantic feel to the Bloom dress & top. The painterly florals and gentle movement of the washed linen work beautifully with the pattern’s relaxed silhouette, gathered skirt and easy, floaty shape.
This linen has a lovely drape that lends itself to dresses and tops you’ll want to reach for again and again.

For something a little more graphic, Classic Blue offers a timeless check with a distinctly individual feel. The yarn-dyed weave adds texture and depth, giving the Bloom silhouette a more defined, everyday look.
It’s a reminder that a beautiful fabric doesn’t need an elaborate print to make an impact. Sometimes, it’s the simplicity of a good check that makes a garment special.
Warm, soft and full of character, Butter brings a lighter feel to the same distinctive grid. It’s a versatile choice for a handmade wardrobe, with a subtle pattern that adds interest without overwhelming the shape of the garment. Used on the Bloom top & dress as a contrast trim gives a subtle accent to the garment.
Both Heirloom Grid colourways are made from 100% linen, offering a different look to Blossom in Spring while sharing that natural, tactile quality we love.

One pattern, so many possibilities
One of the best things about Bloom is how easily you can make it your own. Choose between the dress or top, experiment with sleeve lengths and, for the dress, decide whether you’re in the mood for a shorter, midi or maxi length.
Your fabric choice can change the whole feel of the finished piece, too. A softly draping linen creates a relaxed silhouette, while a more structured cotton can give the same pattern a crisper finish.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to think beyond the pattern envelope and imagine the garment you want to wear - whether that’s a floaty floral dress, a classic checked top or something entirely your own.
Choose your fabric, make it yours
At Rare Patterns, we believe fabric is more than the starting point of a sewing project. It’s part of the creative process - something to collect, combine and turn into pieces that feel uniquely yours.
Our fabrics bring together natural fibres, considered colour and distinctive designs, including exclusive artworks created in-house and with independent artists. We love seeing what happens when those designs leave the fabric roll and become part of someone’s handmade wardrobe.
