Smocking pleaters
Smocking is certainly having a moment, a few pattern brands have included this technique in their sewing patterns. Of course you can do this by hand (search google for tutorials), but if it's something you really want to explore then it might be worth investing in a smocking machine. Popular brands are Amanda Jane, Sally Stanley and Read Pleaters, and they start from around $300AUD second hand. Try searching marketplaces like Facebook, Ebay, Gumtree & Etsy.
